Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Czech Republic


We stayed two evenings in Karlovy Vary. "Karlovy Vary or Carlsbad is a spa town situated in western Bohemia, Czech Republic, on the confluence of the rivers Ohře and Teplá, approximately west of Prague. It is named after Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, who founded the city in 1370. It is historically famous for its hot springs. It is the most visited spa town in the Czech Republic." (See more from the official tourist information, also with pictures from the city). 

 We stayed in an old hotel, well, like everything in the old part of the city, and walked around the various fountains and colonnades. We also visited the magnificent Orthodox Church of St. Peter and Paul and the Catholic Church of St. Mary Magdalene. We also went all the way to Diana Observation Tower, where we enjoyed a nice Czech lunch.

Ficamos duas noites em Karlovy Vary. "Karlovy Vary ou Carlsbad é uma cidade termal situada no oeste da Boêmia, na República Tcheca, na confluência dos rios Ohře e Teplá, aproximadamente a oeste de Praga. Seu nome homenageia o Rei Carlos IV, sacro imperador romano e rei da Boêmia, que fundou o cidade em 1370. É historicamente famosa por suas fontes termais. Nós ficamos em um hotel antigo, bem, como tudo na parte antiga da cidade, e caminhamos pelas várias fontes e colunatas. Também visitamos a magnífica Igreja Ortodoxa de São Pedro e Paulo e a Igreja Católica de Santa Maria Madalena. Nós também fomos até a Torre de Observação Diana, onde desfrutamos de um bom almoço checo.

Churchill, feeling settled and confortable after the long trip

Our pet Churchill is just 6 months old and we were concerned about how he would react after the long trip. He seems to have adapted well as he is the same lively and playful dog. He likes to play all the time, enjoys long walks in a park close by, goes up and down stairs in no time (in spite his small size) and likes to be present. When he wants peace, he goes to his chosen "secret hideout" underneath the bed. Geodetic Observatory Pecný and the village of Ondřejov

We spent two weeks at the Geodetic Observatory (GO) Pecný, located in a hill 1.5 km near the village of Ondřejov. Ondřejov itself is about 1 hour by public transportation from Prague. A bucolic and picturesque place, located inside a forest. We stayed in a small cottage they have for visiting researchers and scholars. GO Pecný date back to the 1960's and their main activity was the determination of astronomical latitude, longitude and azimuth, evening operations. Later on, they started to perform satellite photography, also evening operations. Therefore, an infrastructure was necessary for the scientists and technicians to stay overnight. The main office building, built at that time, had offices each one with a bed, and every floor had a kitchen, bathroom and shower. Today, a similar way of working exists.
