Sunset over the Czech-German border


We left Potsdam by car on Friday (yesterday) on our way to Vienna, with a stop in Karlory Vary. We drove by several German states (Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Thuringia and just a bit of Bavaria) before crossing the border to the Czech Republic. At that moment, Denise captured this magnificent sunset.

It is cold ... -1degrees Celcius.

Nós deixamos Potsdam de carro na sexta-feira (ontem) em nosso caminho para Viena, com uma parada em Karlory Vary, na República Tcheca. Dirigimos por vários estados alemães (Brandemburgo, Saxônia-Anhalt, Saxônia, Turíngia e apenas um pouco da Baviera) antes de atravessarmos a fronteira para a República Tcheca. Neste momento, Denise capturou este magnífico pôr-do-sol.

Churchill, feeling settled and confortable after the long trip

Our pet Churchill is just 6 months old and we were concerned about how he would react after the long trip. He seems to have adapted well as he is the same lively and playful dog. He likes to play all the time, enjoys long walks in a park close by, goes up and down stairs in no time (in spite his small size) and likes to be present. When he wants peace, he goes to his chosen "secret hideout" underneath the bed. Geodetic Observatory Pecný and the village of Ondřejov

We spent two weeks at the Geodetic Observatory (GO) Pecný, located in a hill 1.5 km near the village of Ondřejov. Ondřejov itself is about 1 hour by public transportation from Prague. A bucolic and picturesque place, located inside a forest. We stayed in a small cottage they have for visiting researchers and scholars. GO Pecný date back to the 1960's and their main activity was the determination of astronomical latitude, longitude and azimuth, evening operations. Later on, they started to perform satellite photography, also evening operations. Therefore, an infrastructure was necessary for the scientists and technicians to stay overnight. The main office building, built at that time, had offices each one with a bed, and every floor had a kitchen, bathroom and shower. Today, a similar way of working exists.
