Churchill and the Berlin Jewish Memorial (and also sees a Trabant)


Churchill did not miss the opportunity to visit the Berlin Jewish Memorial, also known as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. It consists of a large area near the Brundenburg Gate covered with 2,711 concrete slabs arranged in a grid pattern. An attached underground has the names of approximately 3 million Jewish Holocaust victims. Churchill is really annoyed that even today there are those who deny the Holocaust.

Churchill also saw a psychedelic Trabant nearby. The Trabant was the car produced in the former East Germany and it was a very popular car as it was basically the only alternative (the other was the Wartburg). East Germans would have to wait between 10 and 15 years to get a car. Russians would wait that same amount of time waiting for the plumber.

Churchill não perdeu a oportunidade de visitar o Memorial aos Judeu, em Berlim, também conhecido como o Memorial dos Judeus Assassinados da Europa. Consiste em uma grande área perto do Portão de Brundenburg, coberta com 2.711 lajes de concreto dispostas em um padrão de grade. Um anexo subterrâneo contém o nome de aproximadamente 3 milhões de vítimas do Holocausto judeu. Churchill está realmente aborrecido de que ainda hoje existam aqueles que negam o Holocausto.

Churchill também viu um Trabant psicodélico nas proximidades. O Trabant foi o carro produzido na antiga Alemanha Oriental e era um carro muito popular, pois era basicamente a única alternativa (a outra era a Wartburg). Os alemães do leste teriam que esperar entre 10 e 15 anos para pegar um carro. Os russos passavam um tempo semelhante esperando pelo bombeiro hidráulico.

Bulgarian restaurant in Vienna

In our first evening in Vienna, we went to investigate the area near our apartment and we found Seasons, a small Bulgarian restaurant. While Denise enjoyed the always good schnitzel I tried Gyuvetch, a Bulgarian dish, which I believe is named after the beautiful clay it is served in.  The pictures tell the story. At the end, I enjoyed the meal along with Bulgarian beer Zagorka. - - - - Na nossa primeira noite em Viena, fomos investigar a área perto do nosso apartamento e encontramos Seasons, um pequeno restaurante búlgaro. Enquanto Denise aprecisava um schnitzel, sempre bom, eu tentei o Gyuvetch, um prato búlgaro, que acredito ter o nome do lindo pote de argila que é servido. As fotos contam a história. No final, eu gostei da refeição juntamente com a cerveja búlgara Zagorka.

Geodetic Observatory Pecný and the village of Ondřejov

We spent two weeks at the Geodetic Observatory (GO) Pecný, located in a hill 1.5 km near the village of Ondřejov. Ondřejov itself is about 1 hour by public transportation from Prague. A bucolic and picturesque place, located inside a forest. We stayed in a small cottage they have for visiting researchers and scholars. GO Pecný date back to the 1960's and their main activity was the determination of astronomical latitude, longitude and azimuth, evening operations. Later on, they started to perform satellite photography, also evening operations. Therefore, an infrastructure was necessary for the scientists and technicians to stay overnight. The main office building, built at that time, had offices each one with a bed, and every floor had a kitchen, bathroom and shower. Today, a similar way of working exists.
