Back to Vienna: EGU 2018, meetings and wonderful photos
We are back to Vienna! One of our favourite spots in the world. We returned to spend some time in Europe but this time without Churchill who stayed at home in Canada.
Estamos de volta a Viena! Um dos nossos lugares favoritos no mundo. Voltamos para passar algum tempo na Europa, mas desta vez sem Churchill, que ficou em casa no Canadá.
I am attending the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2018. In parallel, several meetings at TU Vienna with Daniel and Johannes, meetings of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) Executive and meetings related to IAG Commission 4, which I preside. Meanwhile, Denise was taking breathtaking photos, as usual. A very busy week.
At EGU, I presented two orals:
On the combination of neutral atmospheric delay estimates from different solutions
Marcelo C. Santos, Rosa Pacione, Kyriakos Balidakis, Galina Dick, Jens Wickert, Robert Heinkelmann, Benjamin Männel, and Marco Mendonça, EGU2018-10988,
Rigorous Orthometric Heights: theoretical overview and advantages of use
Ismael Foroughi, Marcelo C. Santos, Yosra Afrasteh, Robert Kingdon, and Petr Vaníček
Orals, EGU2018-11033ECS,
and two posters:
A position domain comparison between VMF1 and the new VMF3
Marcelo C. Santos, Daniel Landskron, Johannes Böhm, Thalia Nikolaidou, and Marco Mendonça,
EGU2018-15219
Tropospheric delays in ground-based GNSS reflectometry – Assessment of ad-hoc models against ray-tracing simulations,
Thalia Nikolaidou, Felipe Nievinski, and Marcelo C. Santos, EGU2018-15453ECS
One of Commission 4 meetings took place during a very nice "schnitzel dinner":
From left to right: Alberto Garcia-Rigo, João Francisco Galera Monico, myself, Pawel Wielgosz, Michael Schmidt and Robert Heinkelmman
Now, some of the amazing photos Denise took this week.
The Votive Church (Votivķirch) is a neo-Gothic church, built in 1879
Monumento Johann Strauss
The Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche) was built between 1623 and 1627 in Baroque style on the site of an old chapel. Despite its relatively austete exterior is remarkably opulent with ersatz marble pillars, gilding and a number of allegorical ceiling frescoes. The semicircular vault ceiling was divided in four bays with paintings in perspective, using illusionary techniques. Executed by Andrea Pozzo in 1703, the remarkable trompe l'oeil dome, painted on a flat part of the ceiling, is a real masterpiece.

The Schottenkirche (Scots Church) is an abbey and parish church, built in 1155 and founded by the irish-Scots Benedictine monks in Vienna.
The Rektoratskirche St. Karl Borromäus, commonly called Karlskirche ( St. Charles Church), is a baroque, rococo style church located on Karlsplatz, Vienna.
In 1713, one year after the last great plague epidemic, Charles Vl, Holy Roman Emperor, pledged to build a church for his namesake patron saint, Charles Borromeo, who was revered as a healer for plague sufferers. The construction began in 1716 and completed in 1737.

Wow beautiful pictures. I am shocked you left Churchill behind although I bet Thales loves the company :)
